Pattern Notes

Gauge and Blocking

Swatches must be blocked to measurements given, but should not be blocked excessively simply to achieve gauge; after they are dry, there should still be some “give”. Exact gauge is not essential, as this is a blanket, but if your gauges are different from those given, you may need to adjust your yarn yardage requirements accordingly.

The blocked gauge in the actual blanket will not always be identical to the gauge asked for in the swatches. As well, because the blanket is circular, you will not be blocking to identical stitches-per-inch measurements throughout the blanket. Rather, in each section, the fabric will need to be stretched more towards the outside edge compared to how much it is stretched at the inside edge.

Please refer to the schematic for guidelines on how wide the diameter of each individual section should be when blocking. It’s recommended that you block the innermost section to the measurement given, then block the next section outwards to the measurement given, and so-on, working outwards section-by-section until the outermost section has been blocked to the given measurements.

Which Needles to Use

Throughout this pattern, the number of stitches on the needles increases, starting with 3 stitches and expanding to 768. If you know how to work the magic loop technique, you may need just one 60″ 2.5mm circular and one 60″ 3.75mm circular needle for the entire blanket.

Alternatively, you can start out on 2.5mm double-pointed needles for Rounds 1-31, switch to a 16″ 3.75mm circular needle for Rounds 32-57, to a 32″ 2.5mm circular needle for Rounds 58-119, to a 60″ 3.75mm circular for Rounds 120-168, and finally to a 60″ 2.5mm circular needle for Rounds 169-174. Any length of 3.75mm needle can be used for the bind-off.

Pattern

With smaller needles and MC, CO 3 sts. Place marker, join in the round, being careful not to twist:

Round 1 and all odd-numbered rounds in this MC-only section: Knit.

All Sizes

Neck

Work in Garter st for 1”.

BO.

Buttonband

Pick up sts at a ratio of 3 sts to every 4 rows.

Work in Garter st for ½ (½, ½, ¾, 1)”.

BO.

Pick up same number of sts as first buttonband side.

Knit 1 row.

Place buttons on finished buttonband. Mark corresponding place on current buttonband with removable stitch markers. These markers are where your buttonholes will go.

On next row, work desired buttonhole at marker, removing markers as you come to them.

The sample uses k2tog at each marker to create the buttonhole. On the next row, the “bar was lifted” between the stitches to form a small afterthought yarn over.

Work in Garter st until second buttonband measures same as first.

Finishing

Place all sleeve underarm stitches and body underarm stitches onto two double pointed needles. Graft together with a third needle.

Weave in ends. Block to measurements.

Sew buttons on, making sure they are firmly attached. Tip: To make buttons even more secure, sew them on once, then with a new piece of thread, sew them again.yarn ball

Baby Hats

Skill Level: Intermediate.

Size: Child, (20” circumference x 11” high, excluding bobble)

Gauge: 17 sts and 23 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Stranded St st after wet blocking or size used to get correct tension.

Materials

Yarn: Studio Donegal Donegal Aran Tweed (4-ply) (100% Wool; 88 yards [80 meters]/50 grams): 1443 Báinín (MC), 1 ball; 4866 Fire (CC1), 1 ball; 4581 Black (CC2), small amounts for duplicate stitch.

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm): DPNs or 16” circular

Notions: 4 Markers; tapestry needle; pompom Maker or cardboard

Abbreviations

RS: right side
WS: Wrong side
Pm: place marker
Sm: slip marker
Rm: remove marker
LHN: left hand needle
RHN: Right hand needle
DPN: Double pointed needle(s)
Sl: slip
St(s): stitch (es)
m-1: Make 1 st: Pick up bar between sts from the front with LN needle and K through back.

Special Stitches

CDD (Centred double decrease): Dec 2 sts, slip 2 stitches together knitwise, k1, pass slipped stitches over.

SR (Short row shaping): WS is facing. Bring yarn to the front, sl st p-wise and bring yarn up, over and back to pull on the slipped stitch until it slides around to show two legs. Keeping the yarn at the back in order to k next st while keeping the tension. When working the stitch, the next time you meet it, work the “doubled stitch” as if it were one, that is, work the two legs together. Note: I used the German method of creating short rows in the hat. Use whichever method you prefer. If you are working the “wrap and turn”, work this at the turning point and ignore the “SR” instruction at the start of the following row, then work the wrapped stitches together with their wraps as you come to them. As you are working in garter stitch, the wraps don’t need to be hidden as they will blend in.

Pattern Notes

The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up in garter stitch with short row shapping on the ear flaps before graduating into two colour fair isle and finally, central double decreases in stranded work to shape the crown. The fox’s features are added afterwards in duplicate stitch. Make a pompom to finish the hat.

Finishing

Break yarn, leaving a long tail, and thread this through the remaining sts, pulling tight to fasten.

Weave in the ends and block gently.

Make pompom (optional)

Approximately 60 yards of yarn is used for the pompom.

I usually follow this method of making pompoms if you don’t have a pompom maker http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pom-Pom.

Cut two cardboard rounds. Cut a small round hole in the middle of them and place them together. Wrap yarn around the circles until fully covered.

The more the circles are covered, the fuller the pompom will be.

Using sharp scissors, cut yarn between the edges of the two circles. Be careful not to pull any of the cut strands.

Gently open the card circles and draw a piece of thread between the two circles and tie tightly round the stitches that meet in the centre hole. Leave sufficiently long ends of thread to be attached on the hat. Remove card circles.

Pattern Notes

When working the collar, with yarn in front (wyif), slip the first stitch purlwise and knit the last stitch through the back loop (ktbl).  This will create a neat edge.

The collar is worked flat to its specified length, then the ends are overlapped to create the split collar. The sweater body begins with the wrong side (WS) of the collar facing so it can be folded down with the right side (RS) of the collar visible when completed.

Pattern

Collar

Begin Bee Stitch pattern worked flat (see Special Stitches).

Work in pattern until collar meas 3½ (3½, 4, 4)” from CO edge.

Begin Body

With smaller needles and beg with WS facing, join by overlapping the first 6 sts over the last 6 sts. Treat these pairs as 1 st by knitting the front and back stitches together. Place a stitch marker after completing these 6 overlapped sts to indicate beg of rnd.

Hem

With larger needles, begin Bee Stitch (worked in the rnd).

Continue until Hem meas approximately 2” (2 Bee Stitch repeats), a total of 9 (10, 12, 14)” from underarm.

Bind-off

Next Rnd: Knit.

Next Rnd: The first st is the first one of the Stranded Yoke Pattern, following the color chart from right to left or working as described below.

Notes about yarn dominance: In stranded knitting you hold at least two strands in your hand. The one you´ve chosen to be the upper strand should stay the upper strand when carried along behind knitted sts. Try not to mess the strands up. It makes pulling them separately out of the skein harder, and the yarn held underneath will show up more expressive in your pattern than the one held upon. The lower-held strand seems to make bolder sts with more impact. So, if you´ve got a pattern section where a color is knitted only sparingly, I recommend to carry this color underneath the color knitted more frequently. This will prevent its sparingly scattered sts from disappearing beneath the wide sections of the other color. For example, from Rnd 9 the Camel colorway should be carried underneath and from Rnds 11-16, the Marine colored strand.
